Easier ways to stay on top of your homework

As we all know, staying concentrated on our homework is one of the most difficult things to do. In this new age of IPhones and laptops, we find that it is way too easy for us to ignore these daunting technological devices.  In today's world, students rely on their cell phones and laptops to help them with whatever they need. Like most teenagers, they feel that texting or listening to music while doing homework is helpful, most parents and teachers disagree. Personally, I listen to music and text while doing my homework because I feel that it helps me relax to the point where I can clear my head and help myself concentrate on the assignment in hand.

According to the NY Times, a 17 year old high school student Vishal uses technology and social media to keep him preoccupied while doing homework. Even though Vishal struggles with his school work, he is still deemed a brilliant student by his teachers. He uses his technological devices to create new and amazing ideas. I feel that he is doing the right thing by keeping himself concentrated on his homework by implementing the use of technology.

In this short video, these students are all sharing their way of doing homework and studying for exams.

As a college student myself, I have managed to come up with a way for me to do homework and balance using my IPhone or laptop in the process. I stumbled upon the "Emergency only" theory. The Emergency Only Theory is when I set my phone to DO NOT DISTURB. I only answer my phone if my parents or professors are trying to get in contact with me. Other than that, I set my music up so that way I don't have to screw with it during the middle of my homework time.

I usually have a set playlist of songs that I have set aside that won't be too much of a distraction while I am doing my homework. In my opinion, listening to music helps me think about what my assignment is and how I am going to go about to finish it. There is no better feeling then the feeling you have after finishing all of your homework.

  1. Thank you, I can relate to this a lot. I always have a difficult time sitting down and doing homework. I always get distracted, especially if there is a good TV show on. I can never fully focus on just my homework. I will now try listening to music as I do my homework. Hopefully this will help me and my grades will improve. Homework is usually an area in the class I struggle in.

  2. Mike! Great post! College students have a hard time concentrating on their studies all the time. The tips you have given can help a whole lot. You should totally teach me some tips in person. I feel like it would help a lot. Students do rely on their mobile devices and laptops all the time. The DO NOT DISTURB button does help me stay concentrated a lot better knowing my phone will not go off because of a tweet or text message and will distract me for the rest of the night. Studying in quiet place always helps as well. When I am in a quiet place I find that I can concentrate a lot better and not get distracted. Great post again Mike :)
